Quantitative imaging and modelling of biological processes

Motivation and Format
The ability to directly observe how biological systems "work" at a molecular level would help in finding answers to many biological questions. Current imaging technologies enable the acquisition of massive numbers of images, yet a timely and accurate analysis of such data can only be done with appropriate computational methods. Systems biology, with its aim of integrating complex measurements in order to understand the functioning of biological systems, is expected to make heavy use of imaging data.
Recognizing the importance of bioimaging for systems biology, the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre have joined forces to organise the first NBIC/SIB Summer School focussing on "Quantitative imaging and modelling of biological processes". The topics that will be covered by leading scientists in the field include: Fundamentals of biomedical image processing and image annotation, Image-based modelling and simulation, Imaging of specific cellular compartments, cell motility, morphogenetic processes and small animals.
