Principal Research

Johan Westerhuis (born Groningen, The Netherlands in 1966, PhD in 1997 at Groningen University in The Netherlands) is a chemometrician who turned to Biosystems Data Analysis in 2004. After his PhD he worked on real-time monitoring of chemical processes at the McMaster Advanced Control Consortium in Hamilton, ON, Canada and at the former Process Analytical Chemistry group at the University of Amsterdam. Since 2001 he has been Assistant Professor in Process Analytical Chemistry and since 2004 Assistant Professor in Biosystems Data Analysis, both at the University of Amsterdam. Westerhuis is Principal Investigator in both the Netherlands Metabolomics Centre as well as in the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre. In 2010 he was awarded with the EAS Award for Outstanding Achievements in Chemometrics for his contributions to the field of chemometrics. Johan Westerhuis is currently the European editor of the Journal of Chemometrics and editorial board member of Metabolomics. He chaired the Dutch Chemometrics Society for several years and organized International Chemometrics Research Meetings (ICRM) in 2002 and 2006. He published over 80 peer reviewed articles and book chapters.

His current research focuses on incorporating prior information of the biological system (e.g. in databases) in the analysis of complex metabolomics data.
