Principal Research
Lodewyk Wessels is group leader of the Bioinformatics and Statistics Group at the Division of Molecular Biology of the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
The research focus within the group is to develop novel computational approaches to exploit a wide variety of data sources in order to improve stratification of cancers into biologically distinct types that are well correlated with outcome and therapy response. In order to achieve this goal, significant effort is devoted to a better understanding of disease development and progression by identification of genes and pathways involved in tumorigenesis. Challenging computational problems that are being addressed include (i) construction of efficient cross-species mappings to translate results obtained in mouse model systems to human tumors; (ii) developing algorithms to efficiently integrate heterogeneous data sources and (iii) extracting structural pathway information from measured data sources and annotation data bases.
Interests
Research interests of Lodewyk Wessels are: diagnostic classification, integrative bioinformatics, insertional mutagenesis, proteomics.
